Group 3 American Art

Rob Jejenich Linda Hu Audreya Jackson

Our presentation was on American Art and we focused on the colonialism that was going on in America during the nineteenth century and the expansion of Europeans in America. The colonialism was mainly towards the native Americans, and American Art was greatly influenced by this. Paintings were made depicting Native Americans and their land and culture through the perspective of the Europeans mostly, and we showcased this by presenting Artwork by John Vanderlyn, George Catlin, and a few others. There is some symbolism like in , "The Death of Jane Mcrea" 1804, the women being killed by the Native Americans symbolizes the European colonies and how they can become vulnerable due to the Native Americans and this reflected bad on them, as to make them out as savages and create hostility towards them.  In the American Art that we focused on was about how the Native Americans were portrayed and we made a comparison as how in some cases, they are still being poorly portrayed through other mediums and have a negative effect on image in a video segment about the negative effects on culture.
